Girls Write Now Mentoring Program

Whether you’re a professional writer or an aspiring young writer, there’s a place for you in the Girls Write Now mentoring program. The program pairs high school girls who are interested in writing with professional women who have excelled in writing and digital media. The mentor/mentee pairs work together to expand their boundaries and create a portfolio of work they can be proud of.

The pairs meet weekly to work on stories, edit each other’s work and brainstorm new ideas. The program culminates with a Chapters Reading Series, where the mentors and mentees get to share their work with the rest of the pairs, Girls Write Now team and special guests.

Don't Miss Our Anthologies

At the end of a mentoring program, the Girls Write Now team puts each of the mentors and mentees’ strongest work into print and multimedia anthologies. Not only is this collection a treasure for those who helped create it, but notable public figures have even taken notice such as Gloria Steinem, Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner. Over the years the Girls Write Now anthologies have also won awards from the Independent Publisher Book Awards, Next Generation Indie Book Awards, and the New York Book Festival.

The anthologies are even available for purchase and funds from book sales all go back to Girls Write Now, so the team can continue to facilitate the wonderful programs for girls and their mentors.

Read the 2016 anthology and the anthologies from previous years.

College Bound High School Girls

In addition to the standard mentoring programs, Girls Write Now also offers a programs for mentors and all college bound high school girls.

  • Wrap-Around Services: This program gives mentors access to a therapy panel, which consists of licensed mental health professionals who offer pro bono services. In order for the girls to feel comfortable enough to write about issues that can be deeply personal, mentors need to be able to build trusting, safe relationships with their mentees. The therapy panel can help guide mentors in cultivating that kind of relationship.

  • College Bound Program: Any high school girl in New York City can take advantage of this program, whether she's in a mentoring program or not. The program offers a series of college prep workshops that focus on resumes, college essays, the application process and more.
