Don't Miss The Virtual Exhibits

Known as "the museum without walls," City Lore goes into NYC communities with the goal of preserving their art and culture. Some displays are temporary, but others are converted into virtual exhibits that are available online. Right now, City Lore has two exhibits from the past available to view on their website. The first is "Weaving of War," which was originally features at the Puffin Room in 2006. As you click through the presentation, you'll see how textile artists in Asia, Latin America and South Africa depicted their experiences of war in their work. The second exhibit available online is "Missing a Streetscape of a City in Mourning," which was originally on display at the New York Historical Society in 2002. In this presentation, you'll see the shrines and memories created around New York City after September 11.

City Lore's Assembly Programs

New York City is a diverse place where cultures from around the world mix and mingle. Introduce your students to art, music and dance that they might not otherwise see by hosting a City Lore assembly program. All performances are interactive and give audience members the opportunity to join sing-alongs, play instruments and ask questions. Both students and staff will learn something new and be entertained by these talented performers. The five programs available are:

• Los Pleneros De La 21: Puerto Rican Bomba & Plena
• Malini Srinivasan & Friends: Bharatanatyam Dance & Carnatic Music
• Mexico Beyond Mariachi: Regional Mexican Dance & Music
• Tahuantinuyo: Music of the Andes

Professional Development Programs

Aside from preserving history, one of City Lore's core values is educating communities about their history and the history of other cultures. To help New York City teachers and parents foster learning and curiosity in their children, City Lore offers professional development workshops.

• Arts Integration: This workshop for teachers who want to learn creative ways to integrate art into their daily lesson plans.
   
• Family Workshops: Parents and children who attend this workshop will participate in collaborative activities designed to build literacy, communication and analytical skills.
   
• Teaching Artist Development: This workshop is for teaching artists who work with multicultural and mixed-level students. Attendees will learn about how to facilitate art-making that requires students to incorporate their family history.
   
• Teaching American and World History: iTeachers looking for new and interesting ways to teach history to their students will love this workshop. City Lore even provides sample lessons aligned with Common Core standards.
