The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Calipulli is about celebrating the people and traditions of Mexico, and there are few traditions so significant as Dia de los Muertos, also known as The Day of the Dead, which coincides with Halloween. On this day, people of Mexican heritage also dress up in elaborate costumes and ghoulish makeup, but for different reasons. The holiday is meant to pay homage to loved ones who have passed on by celebrating life through parades, festivals, food and reverence. In 2017, Calpulli staged a venerable performance of “Dia de los Muertos,” combining Mexican folklore with French ballet that also included progressive takes on gender expression.A Review By the New York Times
