Know Your City: Children First!

Fall is here, Halloween is coming, and Christmas is just round the corner. We combined some ideas and initiatives from NYXT’s content partners that will help you take to action, learn more about communities in the city, and enjoy this season moving, learning and sharing. Kids of all ages invited!

The LGBT Center

Founded in 1983, The Center fosters a welcoming environment where everyone is celebrated for who they are. They have programs designed to help LGBT families establish healthy relationships and community connections, and are focused on providing spaces for dialogue, education, and therapy.  Some of their activities include Monthly Kidding Around play days for LGBT families and groups for current and expecting parents. Visit their calendar and connect!

Reading Partners

When was the last time that you read to someone? How are your skills at reading aloud? What about your teaching skills? Reading Partners’ goal is to provide individualized support to students, making sure that their reading level is age-appropriate, helping children reach their full academic and life potential. You can supporting them directly by referring a friend, becoming a partner, leading a book drive, or indirectly by assisting children in your family and in your community to read actively. Here you can find their resources for rising readers!

Girl Rising

A film about nine unforgettable girls was the beginning of Girl Rising. Through short form videos, feature films, and books, they work to “ensure that girls around the world are educated and empowered,” with particular emphasis countries with less resources such as India, Peru and Nigeria. If you are an educator, consider using their resources for the classroom. You can also watch and screen their videos, and take action following their guide. For example, take five minutes and read their fact sheet.
